  1. Turkey's original inhabitants were one of the first farmers.  The
  2. Hittite, Phrygian and Lydian flourished in Turkey as did much of
  3. Greek civilization.  After the fall of Rome in the 5th century,
  4. Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine Empire for 1,000
  5. years.  It fell in 1453 to the Ottoman Turks who ruled a vast
  6. empire for over 400 years.  The Ottoman Empire controlled Syria,
  7. Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and many
  8. islands in the Aegean sea.  Turkey joined Germany and Austria in
  9. World War I, after which it lost much territory and the Islamic Khilafa
  10. (leadership) fell together with the Ottoman sultanate.
  11. On October 29, 1923 a secular republic was declared by Ataturk who worked
  12. hard to cut Turkey's links to Islam. Turkey later became a member of the  
  13. NATO. Turkey invaded Cyprus on July 20, 1974 after Greek officials
  14. seized the Cypriot government attempting to unify it with Greece. 
  15. Turkey sought a divided Cyprus.  U.S. aid was suspended in 1975
  16. and Turkey stopped the U.S. use of air and naval bases.  Aid was
  17. restored in 1978 and on September 12, 1980 a military coup
  18. occurred.  Martial law was imposed and lifted in 1984.  The
  19. military transferred power in 1983 to an elected parliament.
